The City of Lone Tree is the primary local government, and it resides within Douglas County, Colorado, in zip code 80124. There are also isolated sections of unincorporated Douglas County within the 80124 zip code, noteably the community of Acres Green, at the southwest corner of C470 and Yosemite Street, bordered on the north by C470, and going west almost to Quebec Street.

The schools in Lone Tree are part of the Douglas County School District. The Douglas County schools have consistently been ranked among the top schools in Colorado. Lone Tree is close to the extensive shopping and business areas of County Line Road on the north, including recently annexed Park Meadows Mall, one of the largest retail complexes in the state of Colorado, located at the intersection of C470 and I-25. The Ridgegate master planned community in Lone Tree, mentioned earlier, is anchored by Sky Ridge Medical Center, a HealthOne full service hospital with luxury patient accommodations and its own botique shopping mall, and a new "town center" style shopping and residential center, anchored by a recently completed Super Target store.

A new South Metro Recreation District community and recreation center at Ridgegate is one of several public recreation centers in the South Metro area, and adjoins the huge open spaces of The Bluffs Regional Park. It boasts a year-round indoor heated pool, a seasonal outdoor pool, basketball courts, outdoor tennis courts, exercise and weight rooms, and community meeting rooms available to all South Metro area residents. Lone Tree also has several well-maintained parks and open areas, part of the extensive Douglas County Colorado open space and trails system. Hike and bike paths throughout the area provide access to the extensive trails and parks of many other South Metro areas, including those throughout adjacent Highlands Ranch. One can hike or bike all the way from Cherry Creek in Parker to the east, throughout the Lone Tree and Highlands Ranch communities, and all the way to Chatfield Park and Reservoir to the west. Extensive trail connections extend to the extensive South Metro Highline Canal trails system to the north of Lone Tree, which includes hike, bike and horse trails along the path of the historic old Highline Canal irrigation ditch.

Lone Tree also has a specially designated entertainment and dining district, part of the Park Meadows complex, located at the southeast intersection of C470 and Yosemite Rd., where dozens of restaurants, from fast food to elegant cafes, compete for your dining dollars, and a huge multi-screen cineplex serves up the latest first run movies.

Other Lone Tree Points of Interest

The City of Lone Tree, in conjunction with Douglas County, will soon be dedicating a historic ranch property as part of the collection of city/county recreational parks. Just east and south of the I-25 / Lincoln Blvd intersection, many of the old ranch buildings will be retained and restored, so that residents and visitors can get a feel for what ranch life was like from about the turn of the 20th century to the middle 1950s.

Just south of the new Lone Tree recreation center, and between I-25 and Bluffs Regional Park, archealogists are researching one of the earliest pre-historic Native American sites. The dig site is not open to the public, but it will be interesting to see the results as they are discovered. It is already believed that this site could be one of the very earliest continuously inhabited locations in North America.
