Littleton Colorado is a large area just south and west of Denver. Its boundaries have evolved and changed many times over the years, with many areas that used to be in Littleton being split off into Centennial, Lone Tree, and Highlands Ranch. Littleton currently consists of areas in western Arapahoe County, northwestern Douglas County and southeastern Jefferson County.

Historic Old Littleton, the true City of Littleton, is only a small fraction of what many Denver Metro area residents consider Littleton. It consists primarily of residential areas, with a quaint old downtown retail and business area around the US85 (Santa Fe) and Littleton Blvd intersection. It lies generally west of Broadway, north of C470, south of Belleview, and east of the Platte River Valley. To the west of Littleton is the small cities of Bow Mar and Columbine Valley, and unincorporated Jefferson County. North of Littleton are the cities of Sheridan and Englewood. The city of Centennial is just east of Littleton. To the south of Littleton is the western part of Highlands Ranch, in unincorporated Douglas County.

Many long time homeowners, and many real estate agents, mistakenly still use Littleton in their property addresses, even though they may no longer officially considered to be Littleton. In addition, by the same long-standing tradition and usage, the US Post Office still allows Littleton addresses for some communities that are in unincorporated parts of Douglas and Jefferson Counties, that are NOT actually within the City of Littleton. This makes searching with Littleton in the city name a very problematic, and error prone, process. As a result, instead of using Littleton in the city name, it may be better to use specific zip codes in your search, as long as you know where you really want to be, and not use a city name at all!

Littleton Local Governments

The true City of Littleton, generally known as "Old Littleton", covers only a small part of this area, primarily in zip code 80120, and within western Arapahoe County. Most of what is currently known as Littleton, due solely to USPS mailing addresses, is actually in unincorporated Jefferson County, or in unincorporated Douglas County. Areas of Littleton previously in unincorporated Arapahoe County, have since been annexed into the City of Centennial, in central Arapahoe County, and are no longer considered to be Littleton.

Littleton Colorado Schools

The public schools that students will attend depends on what area of Littleton the home is in, and could be any of these: Littleton Public Schools, Jefferson County (Jeffco) Schools, or Douglas County Schools.

Arapahoe Community College, just south of Old Littleton, provides two-year degrees in a variety of disciplines.

Key Littleton Businesses

Littleton is primarily suburban, with major businesses and retail shopping generally being along the US-85 (Santa Fe) corridor, and along the southwest C470 corridor.

Lockheed-Martin, a key space and defense contractor, operates a major facility in the Waterton Canyon area, and is one of the largest major employers in the Denver metro area.

Recreation and Fun Stuff in Littleton

Chatfield Reservoir and State Park is one of the major recreation areas in the south Denver area. Work is also wrapping up on the new South Platte Reservior, just below and north of Chatfield, previously a gravel quarry. Other Jefferson County open space and parks are conveniently located in the area. Roxborough State Park, in Douglas County, has wonderful and unique red rock formations, as well as extensive hike and bike paths.
